Recently, someone asked me a question that I haven’t been able to stop thinking about.

I was talking with a friend about a past experience. She listened, paused, and then asked me:

“Have you authorized yourself to truly express how you felt in that moment? Have you authorized yourself to acknowledge that what happened was not okay?”

It landed deep. And it reached much further than that one situation.

Where do you hold back?

Since then, I’ve been asking myself:

•      Where in my life do I not authorize myself to fully explore?

•      Where do I hold back from speaking my truth?

•      Where do I find it hard to ask and receive without feeling guilty?

•      What have I always wanted to do, but keep waiting for permission, from others or even from myself?

This is a profound question that any one of us can ask:

Are there areas in my life that I do not fully authorize myself to explore, to use, to embrace?

It’s information, not failure

When you notice these places, it’s easy to slip into judgment: “I’m stuck. I failed. I didn’t do it the right way.”

But what if you saw it simply as information?

That’s all you need: information and awareness. Because once you see a pattern, you gain the power to change it. You can choose to act differently.

Notice the small moments

The holding back often hides in everyday moments:

•      You stay quiet when you have something to say.

•      You postpone something you’d love to do with “I’ll think about it later.”

•      You hesitate to ask for help, or to accept it.

•      You make yourself a little smaller so that others feel comfortable.

None of these are big dramatic moments. That’s exactly why they’re so easy to miss.

Calm first, then choose

Choosing differently is much easier when your nervous system feels safe. When your body is in stress mode, it reaches for the familiar, even when the familiar keeps you small.

That’s why I invite you to pair this week’s reflection with a simple breathwork practice: box breathing.

Box Breathing

Picture a square, with each side lasting four counts:

1.    Inhale slowly through your nose for 4 counts.

2.    Hold your breath gently for 4 counts.

3.    Exhale slowly through your mouth for 4 counts.

4.    Hold with empty lungs for 4 counts.

Repeat for 4 to 5 rounds, or about 2–3 minutes.

The steady rhythm signals safety to your nervous system. Your heart rate slows, your mind settles, and you create space between the old reaction and a new choice.

If holding feels uncomfortable, shorten each side to 3 counts. There’s no need to strain.

Your Assignment This Week: “Permission Granted”

Every morning: Do 4 rounds of box breathing. Then ask yourself: “What am I ready to authorize myself to do today?”

During the day: Notice the moments when you hold back, stay silent, or say “later.” No judgment, just awareness. Write them down if you can.

Once this week: Pick one of those moments, big or small. Take a few box breaths. Then give yourself permission and do it differently. Speak up. Ask. Receive. Start the thing.

At the end of the week: Reflect on these three questions:

1.    Where did I notice myself holding back?

2.    What did I authorize myself to do differently?

3.    How did it feel in my body?

You don’t need anyone’s permission to live fully. You can begin by giving it to yourself, one breath and one choice at a time.

I’d love to hear what you discover. Hit reply and tell me: what are you authorizing yourself for this week?

With love,

Gosia
